Returning to the Soil

In March of 1997 we visited the Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver Island to discover that almost one half of the magnificent 800+ year old Douglas Firs had been blown down by sustained 100 mph winds of the infamous January windstorm of that year. We've just returned from a visit to the Grove where we observed the biological forces at work turning these downed trees back into nutritional soil that will support new generations of trees. The microbiologist in me led my focus to the many species of fungi that are now living and prospering on the huge tree trunks. These delicate fungi are beginning the process of returning the log to the soil. As evidence that it rained every minute we were on Vancouver Island, note the raindrop on its way down.
