Nature's Whirligig Mother Nature seems to have invented most things before Man began destroying his environment. Saw this lovely flower at the grocery store the other day and was most impressed with the rotation of the outer petals. As there was no wind blowing and I failed to look under the flower to see if it could spin, I can't be sure if the rotation is designed to catch the wind and spin like crazy as in the windmills we all played with as kids. Another option for a flower in Greater Pugetopolis would be that the petals of the bloom are doing the 'wave', a group behavior invented in Seattle. Whether either of these possibilities might be true can be discussed at length. The BIG question, however, has to be whether the petals bend in the other direction when growing in the Southern Hemisphere.
